NEMO STCW Task Force roundtable

The NEMO STCW Task Force, led by Mark Smith, Director of Decarbonisation, NorthStandard under Working Group 1 – Maritime Regulations, is examining how seafarer training and competency standards should evolve to support nuclear-powered vessels. Building on strong engagement with NEMO's stakeholder survey, the Task Force has convened training providers, reactor developers, ship operators, regulators and industry experts to help define future training requirements. Executive Summary
The inaugural NEMO and Nuclear Institute Conference brought together senior representatives from the nuclear and maritime sectors, including regulators, government, the IMO and IAEA, reactor developers, shipowners and operators, classification societies, insurers, lawyers and investors. The conference examined what is required to move maritime nuclear from technological development towards practical deployment.

As momentum builds behind civil nuclear deployment at sea, questions surrounding liability, insurance and risk allocation are becoming increasingly important. Hosted by Ian Truman, Partner, Burges Salmon, this workshop will focus on the legal, insurance and liability frameworks required to support commercial deployment. Discussions will include international liability conventions, insurance market perspectives, risk allocation models and the development of a potential future UKU.S. bilateral civil nuclear liability framework. The workshop will help shape one of the key enabling frameworks required for commercial deployment.
